Some aluminum bend and retain their bend better than others. That part of the blade that you skate on is made of steel. There are two main high-end steels which are powder metal tool steel and bi-metal. Bi-metal blades have a soft layer of steel that attaches to the tube and a hard layer of steel that touches the ice. This type of steel was developed for hacksaw blades. Bont does not believe that bi-metal is a suitable steel for short track applications because the soft part of the steel can flex at high speeds in the turns. This can cause a skater to crash when the steel flexes. Bont's powder metal tool steel is an extremely fine steel and is perfect for speed skating.

*This product will take around 14 days to ship.

The Bont short track Ultrasprint ice blade looks to take on the competition and better it in every way. The steel, the structure supporting it, and the way the assembly is made all deserve attention when you choose your equipment. The GT3 brings these elements together in a blade developed specifically for short track ice skating. It combines Japanese knife steel with a design that benefits from the technology, research, and development behind the Bont Platinum blade.

For skaters building a training or racing setup, that connection provides useful context. The GT3 uses the same materials as the Platinum apart from the steel. Its own steel is tempered using Bont's more than 20 years of short track blade-making expertise. It is a distinct option within the range, with its construction and specifications clearly stated so you can make an informed choice.

Japanese knife steel, tempered with experience

Bont selects the best Japanese knife steel for the GT3. The blade is specified at 64 Rockwell hardness and 1.1 mm thickness. Those details describe the steel at the heart of the product, while the tempering process reflects Bont's experience making blades for this discipline. Material selection and preparation are considered together, rather than treating the steel as an interchangeable part of the assembly.

These are useful specifications to discuss with a coach or blade technician when choosing equipment. Hardness, blade preparation, and your preferred setup all belong in that conversation. The GT3 is supplied without pre-sharpening, so the final edge preparation is part of getting your new pair ready for the ice. Plan for that step before your first session rather than assuming a new blade is ready to skate straight from the box.

Small white lines with a practical purpose

The little white lines along the length of the blue blade tube are there to help with bending. They are a functional detail for blade preparation, rather than simply decoration.

On a long, narrow component, a series of clear reference marks makes it easier to discuss a particular area. Instead of referring vaguely to somewhere near the front or middle, the marks provide a visible point of reference. Their purpose is to support the bending process; they do not replace the measurements, tools, or experience needed to prepare a short track blade.

Machine-bent, with room for individual preparation

The GT3 is supplied machine-bent and has a specified 9 m radius. Bend and radius are separate parts of blade setup, so it is useful to keep those terms distinct when discussing preparation. The white marks help with bending, while the listed radius describes another aspect of the blade's geometry. Your coach or experienced blade technician can help assess the setup in relation to your skating.

A careful approach to preparation starts with understanding what is supplied. You receive a machine-bent pair that still requires sharpening before use. Choosing the appropriate length, checking the mounting arrangement, and preparing the edges are all part of bringing that pair into your existing equipment setup. The reference marks remain a useful visual detail whenever bending work is being considered.

A precise slot for the steel

The slot used to locate the steel in the blade body is made with extremely high precision. This is an important construction detail because it is the interface where the steel and its supporting body come together. A carefully made slot gives the steel a precisely defined place within the assembly before the bonding process is completed.

It is easy to focus on the visible blue finish or the exposed steel runner when comparing blades. The fit between those parts is less obvious in a product photograph, but it is just as much a part of how the blade is made. On the GT3, attention to that interface is built into the manufacturing process. The precision of the slot and the care taken during gluing are complementary steps.

Held in position for 14 hours

During gluing, the blade is held in position for 14 hours while the adhesive sets. The Flex has additional milling in the narrow section beneath the tube, reducing that section's thickness and stiffness. The Firm, used for the Platinum X version, retains a thicker section. Blade steel commonly arrives in a roll, bringing curvature that must be addressed during production. Bont pays extra to source flat sheets of steel for the Platinum range. Starting with flat material reduces the need to work against the shape of a coil and supports the goal of making every blade consistently straight.

K390 is a high-end tool steel selected for its edge retention and wear resistance. For a short track skater, the quality of the runner matters alongside the stiffness of the tube. The Platinum X brings these elements together in a blade designed for demanding racing use, with attention paid to how the steel is prepared, finished, and bonded.

Slow grinding in pairs

The process begins with 1.3mm steel. Bont grinds 0.1mm from each side to produce a finished blade thickness of 1.1mm. Only two blades are ground at a time, using high-end grinding stones imported from Germany. This slow, controlled approach helps prevent heat distortion during grinding and supports a consistent finished surface.

The finished thickness is only one part of the result. The way material is removed also matters. Taking time at this stage helps preserve the flatness established by the original sheet and gives the later bonding process a carefully prepared runner to work with.

The Green finish, with a close view of the steel runner, Bont branding, and mounting cups.

Bonded and held to preserve the bend

A tighter slot and carefully selected adhesive

The runner sits in a slot with space for adhesive. Excess space can allow movement during bonding, so both the adhesive and the slot dimensions matter. After testing multiple adhesives, Bont selected one strong enough to reduce the blade slot width by 0.1mm. The smaller gap helps limit movement and reduce the chance of warping as the blade is assembled.

This bonding gap serves a different purpose from the milled section that distinguishes the green Flex and Firm blades. The slot controls how the runner is bonded into the tube. The section beneath the tube influences stiffness. Keeping these details separate makes it easier to understand how the blade's construction contributes to both consistency and feel.

A 14-hour setting process

While the adhesive cures, each blade is held in a custom jig at a minimum of nine points. It remains supported for 14 hours to help preserve the intended bend. These purpose-built jigs are an important part of the process because the blade needs consistent support while the bond sets, rather than being left free to move.

Finished for the demands of the corner

The sides of the runner receive a brilliance polish to reduce friction when they touch the ice at steep lean angles. This attention to the side surface complements the care taken with grinding and bonding. The blades are supplied machine bent, with a 9m radius, and are not pre-sharpened. Prepare and sharpen them appropriately before skating.

Bont worked with top national teams to refine tube stiffness across the Platinum range. Too much stiffness can make a blade difficult to manage, while too little can absorb power. The X offers the firmer choice within that approach. That material has an inherent curve and memory that must be managed during manufacturing. For the Platinum, Bont pays extra to start with flat sheets of steel. This avoids introducing the curvature associated with rolled stock before the precision grinding process begins.

K390 is a high-end tool steel selected for its edge retention and wear resistance. For a short track skater, the quality of the runner matters alongside the feel of the tube. The finished blade brings these elements together in a racing design developed with Derrick Campbell.

Slow grinding for a consistent runner

The process begins with steel that is 1.3mm thick. Removing 0.1mm from each side produces the finished 1.1mm blade thickness. This is a small amount of material, but controlling its removal is an important part of achieving the intended finish.

Bont slowly grinds just two blades at a time using high-end German grinding stones. Taking time over this stage helps prevent the heat-related warping that can occur during faster grinding. The emphasis is on flatness and accuracy, with the manufacturing process supporting the performance expected of a racing blade.

A close look at the Green finish, steel runner, and mounting cups.

Carefully bonded and held through curing

A tighter slot for greater control

The runner sits in a slot with space for adhesive. Excess space can allow movement during bonding, so both the adhesive and the slot dimensions matter. After testing a range of adhesives, Bont selected one with stronger bonding performance and reduced the slot width by 0.1mm. The narrower gap helps limit movement and improve precision.

This bonding gap serves a different purpose from the milled section that distinguishes the Green Flex from the Green Firm. The slot controls how the runner is bonded into the tube; the thinner milled section changes the blade's stiffness.

A 14-hour cure in a dedicated jig

During curing, a custom jig holds the blade at no fewer than nine points, with the exact arrangement depending on blade length. The blade stays in the jig for 14 hours while the adhesive sets. Holding it in this controlled position helps maintain its intended bend through the bonding process.

Details that matter on the ice

A polished side finish

The blade sides receive a high-gloss brilliance polish to reduce friction when they touch the ice during deep leans.
