From Firm to Featherlight: The Evolution of Supercell Skate Frames
In our initial Supercell frame design, we prioritized durability over flex. We erred on the side of caution with thicker sidewalls to prevent any potential breakage and negative publicity. However, many of our skaters desired more flex for their skating style.
To address this, we've been experimenting with removing 1-2 layers of carbon at a time, using both in-house testing and various layup techniques with uni-directional carbon for a controlled flex response.
Our 110mm XXF frame, even with 3.0mm sidewalls, weighs only 156g, outperforming the lightest aluminum frames in strength and weight. The Firm version, with 2.5mm sidewalls, further reduced the weight to an impressive 140g.
After extensive testing, we're thrilled to introduce the new Ultralight frame with 1.8mm sidewalls and an astonishing weight of 117g. This isn't just a marginal improvement—it's a groundbreaking 30 grams lighter than the world's lightest frame, a true testament to our engineering prowess.
But our innovation doesn't stop here. We're committed to continuous improvement, with even lighter versions of our 100mm, 125mm, and a new hilow frame on the horizon for 2025.
