Speed Skate Wheels, Built for Quad Racing Performance

Quad speed skate wheels are engineered specifically for roller speed skating, where acceleration, corner grip, and rolling efficiency are critical. Unlike recreational quad wheels, speed skating wheels are optimized for racing on indoor tracks, coated concrete, and smooth competition surfaces. The correct quad speed skate wheel enables skaters to achieve maximum speed while maintaining stability and control during high-load cornering.

Quad roller speed skating demands wheels that respond instantly to power transfer while maintaining predictable grip at racing pace.

Why Quad Speed Skate Wheels Are Different

In quad speed skating, races are won through acceleration out of corners and maintaining momentum on straights. Wheel size, urethane rebound, and hub stiffness all play a major role in performance.

Most quad speed skate wheels range from 63mm to 70mm in diameter, providing the ideal balance between rapid acceleration and sustained roll speed. Smaller diameters improve responsiveness and cornering agility while maintaining sufficient roll efficiency for competitive racing.

High-performance quad speed wheels are designed to deliver:

    • Explosive acceleration
    • Strong corner grip at lean angles
    • Efficient roll with minimal drag
    • Stable tracking under sprint loads
    • Consistent performance lap after lap

Advanced Urethane Technology for Quad Speed Skating

Modern quad speed skating wheels rely on advanced polyurethane formulations rather than hardness ratings alone. Racing urethane must provide both grip and rebound without excessive deformation.

    Premium speed urethane focuses on:

    1. High rebound for maximum energy return
    2. Controlled flex for corner traction
    3. Reduced rolling resistance
    4. Heat stability during racing
    5. Long-lasting performance under competition loads

Precise curing temperatures and production consistency are essential, as small variations in urethane structure can significantly affect race performance.

A leading example is the Bont Royal Assassin quad speed skate wheel, widely regarded as the best-performing wheel in competitive roller speed skating. Its gravity-poured hot cast urethane, developed with urethane specialist Scott Corey, is intentionally more flexible than traditional racing wheels, allowing the widely used 92A hardness to perform reliably across a broad range of indoor racing surfaces. This flexibility produces exceptional grip through corners while maintaining a smooth, fast roll. Combined with precision-machined 6061 aircraft-grade aluminium hubs for maximum stiffness and power transfer, plus a refined skater-informed profile that minimizes break-in time, the Royal Assassin delivers elite acceleration, corner confidence, and durability that commonly lasts far longer than comparable quad speed skate wheels.

Hub Design and Power Transfer in Quad Speed Wheels

The hub is critical in quad speed skating, where power transfer happens rapidly during sprint efforts.

High-end quad speed skate wheel hubs are engineered to:

    1. Minimize flex during acceleration
    2. Maintain precise bearing alignment
    3. Improve responsiveness exiting corners
    4. Reduce energy loss under load

Rigid hubs paired with responsive urethane allow skaters to convert effort directly into forward speed.

Choosing the Right Quad Speed Skate Wheels

When selecting quad speed skating wheels, skaters should consider:

    1. Indoor track surface type
    2. Skater weight and racing style
    3. Sprint versus endurance racing
    4. Desired grip versus roll balance
    5. Track temperature and coating

Fine-tuning wheel hardness and setup allows racers to maximize performance under specific competition conditions.

High Performance Quad Speed Skate Wheels

Modern quad roller speed skate wheels combine advanced urethane chemistry, precision aluminium hubs, and race-proven shaping to deliver elite-level performance. Designed for competitive quad racing, these wheels provide the acceleration, grip, and durability required for serious speed skating.

    Roller Derby Skates FAQ

Roller derby consists of a series of short jams in which both teams send a skater called a jammer to try to lap opposing players. The defending players attempt to block the jammer and stop them from scoring points. A point is scored for each blocker the jammer passes. Roller derby is a contact sport played by two teams of 15 skaters. The USA has the largest number of registered roller derby players.

As roller derby is a contact sport, there are often crashes, so roller derby skates need to hold up to more punishment than a normal roller skate. Bont roller derby skates typically have a triple layer of toe protection for this very reason, but we still recommend wearing a toe protector to keep your boots looking like new (for as long as possible). You can play roller derby on any type of roller skate. Still, a low-cut boot made of fiberglass or carbon fiber will allow you to have more maneuverability and make it easier to get around your opponent or move into position to block an opponent.

Roller derby is not very dangerous. Skaters wear helmets, mouth guards, knee guards, elbow pads, and wrist protectors. If you fall over or are knocked over, your protection will stop you from being injured. There are very few injuries in roller derby bouts. The wrist is the most commonly injured part of the body when playing roller derby, so make sure you use a high-quality set of wrist protectors such as the Bont wrist protectors

Yes, no problem at all. Remember that you may want to change your harder wheels to a softer wheel, such as the Bont BPM wheel or Glide wheel. These wheels will give superior performance outdoors. Also, you may damage your indoor wheels when skating outdoors. So it is a good idea to swap your wheels to a dedicated outdoor skate wheel when skating outdoors. I would also suggest you use another set of bearings just to make swapping your wheels out that much easier and faster. Outdoor skate wheels are softer wheels than indoor wheels, which are harder than you use outdoors.

Bont roller derby skates are designed specifically for roller derby. Roller derby can be tough on skates, and skaters can wear through the outer skin material if high-quality materials are not used in the construction of the boot. Bont Roller derby wheels use high-grade urethane, and Bont roller derby bearings are tested on Bont’s professional roller derby team of skaters. If you are looking for the best roller derby skates, Bont roller derby skates are for you. Make sure you check out our sizing charts to obtain the best fit for your feet.

Bont roller derby skates, of course!!! They are lighter and stronger than the competition and very competitively priced. They come with very high-quality components, and they have triple toe protection. Bont skates offer the highest level of ankle support of any boot on the market.

You can buy Bont Roller Derby Skates online here or visit one of our many stockists.

The best way to start playing roller derby is to join a team. They will have coaches who can help you get up to speed and play in a bout in no time at all!

One of the most popular ways to slow down and stop on roller skates is to use the toe stop. Drag your roller skate toe stop behind you to slow down. Your roller skate toe guards or toe caps will prevent damage to the roller skate toe if you lean too far down.

    Men's Roller Derby Skates

When fitting your men's roller derby skates, loosen the laces and wear thin socks. Put your foot in the men's roller derby skate and kick your heel to the back of the boot. Now tighten the bottom laces firmly but don't cut off the blood circulation.

You can tighten the top laces on your men's roller derby skates much tighter. If you feel any discomfort on your men's roller skates, you can heat mold your boots in the oven.

    Women's Roller Derby Skates

Women's roller derby skates typically use shorter plates to match the smaller-sized roller skate boot. Women's roller derby skates often come in bright colors like pink, purple, white, and black. Women's roller skates can come in different styles, such as speed skates, park skates, street skates, indoor skates, and roller skates. The larger the wheel, the faster the skate will go and the harder it will be to push.

    About Roller Skates

Bont roller skates are made lighter and stronger than most roller skates on the market. Our background comes from high-performance short-track speed skating and roller speed skating, so we have always made our roller skates with the same underlying principles of making the skates light, strong, and fast! When you try your Bont roller skates on for the first time, you will notice how light they feel and how comfortable they are. Once you try Bont roller skates and Bont roller derby skates, you won't be able to skate on another pair of skates again.

    About Roller Derby Wheels

Bont Roller Derby Wheels such as the Evolve wheels and the Ballistic wheels are designed specifically for derby skating in a roller rink, and they will outperform ordinary roller skate wheels. Smaller wheels are slower than larger wheels and typically favoured for park skating.

Toe stops for Derby Roller Skates

Toe stops are not actually used for stopping on roller derby skates. You use them to go! That’s why we named our professional toe stop the Toe Go! Our toe stop has been designed not to mark the floor, and it has a perfect take-off angle as well as a super grippy material. The head of the toe stop is oversized to give even more grip. A Toe Stop is a must for roller derby.

    Derby Boots

Roller Derby boots need to be comfortable and have lots of ankle support. You do not need a high cut boot for roller derby as long as your low cut boot has enough ankle support. Bont derby boots have carbon fiber or fiberglass counters, which are light and strong and will support your ankle for the tightest turns or hardest stops.  Make sure you check out our sizing charts to obtain the best fit for your feet. To determine your shoe size, please review our size guide. Bont high cut boots offer more ankle support than low cut boots.

Derby Skate Plates - Nylon vs. Aluminum

Generally speaking, an aluminum plate is better than a nylon plate, but this difference is not as great on a Bont boot as with many other boots. The reason is that base of a Bont boot is stiffer than other boots which support the plate.

There are also many types of aluminum plates, including machined and cast plates. Machined aluminum plates such as the Bont Athena plate are higher-grade plates than the Bont Tracer plate, for example. Bont's nylon plate is called the Prodigy plate.

    LIGHTER. STRONGER. FASTER.
